In addition to heating and hot water preparation, the heat pump is the only heat generator that enables simple cooling without great additional expense. While "cooling" with heat pumps is already common in countries such as the Netherlands, it is not yet established in other European countries.
Whether new construction or renovation, the unique technology of the heat pump allows to cool in summer. Instead of distributing hot water over the heating system, the heat pump cools down the water in the heating system and passes "cold" water through it instead. Due to the small surface area, cooling with radiators is not possible. Surface heating systems such as underfloor, wall or ceiling heating systems, can be used to cool the room pleasently.
Active cooling with an air/water heat pump of the alira LWAV+ series
We turn the system around: "active cooling". So-called reversible air/water heat pumps offer the possibility of actively cooling rooms by reversing the process, i.e. by reversing the mode of operation - "Cooling" instead of "Heating".
Behind reversible cooling is nothing else but the refrigerator and its function, which we all know. Heat pumps and refrigerators are physically identical and basically have the same components. The only difference between the two is the benefit. In order to be able to actively cool with a heat pump, it must have some additional components in addition to a reversible refrigeration circuit. Similar to an air conditioning system, heat is then extracted from the room.
If you decide for a heat pump with active cooling, you should expect slightly higher investment costs than with a heat pump without "cooling function". The energy input for active cooling is also higher compared to passive cooling. but also higher cooling perfonrmance can be achieved and the rooms are pleasently "cooled" on hot days. A plus in living comfort.
Passive cooling with a ground source heat pump of the alterra WZSV series
The "passive cooling" of the alterra ground source heat pumps is a very cost-effective way to use the low temperatures in the ground for pleasant and environmentally friendly cooling of the rooms in summer. Excess heat is removed from the rooms and dissipated into the ground.
The existing heating surfaces, such as underfloor, wall or ceiling heating, can be used as cooling surfaces. In this way, you can create your personal feel-good climate cost-effectively and in an environmentally friendly manner, with gentle temperature control and without any disturbing draughts.
With this natural cooling, the heat pump is switched off except for control and circulation pumps. Only a low power consumption is assumed for the circulating pumps to tap the cooling source earth and the heating. Due to the reduced operation and the use of environmental energy, passive cooling offers a particularly environmentally friendly solution with low operating costs. Another positive side effect is that the soil can be regenerated by the heat supplied, which leads to an improvement in overall efficiency.
alpha innotec has recognised the trend towards environmentally friendly cooling and offers a wide range of heat pumps specifically for passive cooling. In addition, special cooling packages are available for retrofitting some ground source heat pumps.
